Malkauns

Malkauns is a pentatonic (audav-audav) raga using only Sa, komal Ga, Ma, komal Dha, and komal Ni — Re and Pa are entirely absent. It's usually classified under the Bhairavi thaat, though its five-note structure means that classification is more a convenience than a perfect fit. Traditionally performed deep at night, it has a weighty, introspective character and is often approached slowly, with heavy use of meend between its close-set komal notes.
